Case: “Kerk&Leven” – A profitable solution to produce a substantial number of editions, small print runs and regional content of great interest to its readers
The weekly, Kerk&Leven, of which there are approximately 500 editions, is published by the Flemish Catholic Church and is issued in the form of a newspaper. Its total print run of 300,000 copies shows that there are relatively few copies for each edition, which contains a large section of articles on national news, plus various pages on regional and even local news. This trump creates a strong tie with the readers and local employees yet, at the same time, poses a great profitability challenge.
P3 thought up, designed and went in search of partners to join in a concept that combines the following:
- a web-based editor having a database and image bank that local volunteers can use to create their own newspaper;
- linked to an automated work flow which, in turn, links the manner in which the newspaper is composed to the subscriber's address;
- inkjet technology newspaper production, addressed according to posting sequence;
- sorting and bundling according to the post round.
This is a solution that ensures that Kerk&Leven:
- can raise local employees' contribution and motivation, which will reinforce and expand the network of volunteers;
- is more solidly embedded as a weekly newspaper to bring it even closer to its readers;
- can also issue a greater number of editions to entire local communities or groups because there is no need for a minimum print run;
- is afforded the possibility of starting up and distributing editions that are no longer tied to geographic boundaries;
- will continue to be profitable and thus secure its future.
